Thiruvallur: A Bank of India branch in Thiruvallur was robbed off jewellery worth Rs six crore by unidentified persons over the weekend who had reportedly opened the safe without breaking it.

The branch of Bank of India which was broken in, is located in the Oil Mill area of Tiruvallur near Chennai. Suspiciously, perpetrators had the knowledge of opening the safe without using force as the safe was undamaged and the walls were also not broken. While sources say that Rs six crore worth of jewellery was stolen, reports have emerged that Rs 25 lakh worth of cash in the bank is safe.

The jewellery that was stolen reportedly belongs to people who had pledged it for loans.

Superintendent of Police, Sibi Chakravarthy who visited the site is conducting a detailed inquiry into the theft and the bank staff are also being questioned. The branch manager Sekar and other staff are also being questioned as the police have not ruled out suspicion that the robbery might have been an inside job.

The bank is located right opposite a supermarket in the area and CCTV footages from both the supermarket and the bank are being analysed.
