3-year-old boy strangled near Chennai, neighbour held
CHENNAI: A 24-year-old man was arrested for kidnapping and strangulating a three-year-old boy at Periyapalayam near Chennai on Thursday. The police are trying to ascertain the motive behind the murder.
Tamilselvan sneaked into the house of the child, identified as Hemanath, at night when he was asleep and kidnapped him after covering his mouth. He strangled the boy and tied up his hands and legs before dumping the body into a three-foot deep sump in front of Hemanath's house in Muthalamman Koil Street at Azhinjivakam near Periyapalayam.
Hemanath's father Murugan, a casual labourer, was shocked to find his son missing when he woke up at 3am. The boy had been sleeping next to his mother along with his siblings Surekha, 11, and Sumitha, 5.
Neighbours and relatives who began searching for the boy found Tamilselvan roaming about in the area in a suspicious manner. When questioned, he gave contradictory answers.
They later handed over Tamilselvan to the Periyapalayam police. During questioning, he confessed to having killed the boy. A team from the Periyapalayam police station recovered the boy's body from the sump and sent it for autopsy.
Tamilselvan and Murugan are relatives and lived in adjacent houses. The police are inquiring if the murder was committed occurred due to previous enmity.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Tamilselvan, who is an unemployed graduate, had been causing trouble in the area in the past few weeks.
