Chennai metro train services extended on New Year
Chennai: While most of the hotels in the city have declared that there will be no or subdued celebrations for the New Year, CMRL has opened its gates at midnight to ensure that people can get home safe.
CMRL has announced that their services will continue even after midnight of 31 December. It said the decision has been taken to make it easy for commuters to travel freely during the celebrations.
A CMRL official said services from Koyambedu to Alandur will run till 1.30 am and services from Alandur to Koyambedu will run till 2 am. The trains will be run every 15 minutes. On normal days, the services resume from 6 am and halt at 10 pm.
The official said the services have been extended purely keeping the safety of the commuters in mind. "Along with New Year celebrations, mishaps also take place on roads. This would reduce drunk driving on roads," said the official.
Talking about the number of people they expect to take the Metro that night, the official said, "We are not looking at numbers: we just want people to be benefited by this and travel safe."
To ensure security for women the official added that security will be enhanced during New Year Eve and people do not have to worry about travelling on the Metro.
CMRL, was boon to the city during the December rains and floods, the Metro was flying high with regular services and proved to be the connecting link for many Chennaiites as other services were disrupted.
