Chennai makes it to India's Smart City list
Chennai: Chennai makes it to the list of top 20 cities of India that would receive the first phase of funding as part of 'Smart City Mission'. "Steps would be taken forward according to the components as mentioned in the Smart City proposal. We are yet to receive orders regarding the recent announcement," said Chennai Corporation Commissioner, Dr B Chandramohan.
As per the guidelines of Smart City Mission, cities with exceptional proposal would get into the cluster of 20 cities that would receive first round of funding. Others would be left to improve their proposal to get benefited with the consecutive round of funding.
Shubhranshu Pani, managing director (Infrastructure Services), JLL India, the consultant who was instrumental in the preparation of the proposal for Chennai, said, "The Smart City initiative will be a game-changer in raising the standard of infrastructure in the cities in the country. Adequate attention is paid to sustainability, infrastructure and improving the life of inhabitants.
These cities will now commence the process of roll-out. As a next stage, these cities will create specific project reports, mobilise funds and, thereafter, implement the projects. Other citites in south India that got into the list are Kochi, Davangere, Belagavi, Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam and Kakinada.
