Chennai: One month since the disaster took place, the badly affected areas are still fighting to return to normal. Thiruvalluvar Gurukulam Middle School at Saidapet that had 15 feet water on 2 December 2015, reopened.

The school that has a strength of 200 students had an attendance that seemed remarkably low, says headmistress G R Jeeva. "'Only 10 of them turned up at the school. Our student base is mostly from the slums in and around the neighbourhood.

Since most of them are relocated and some are still struggling to find their feet, they did not turn up. We have a hostel that can accommodate 100 students but we are opening it only on 8 January since there is more cleaning work to be done."

"On the Corporation's part, they cleaned the bushes and sprinkled bleaching powder. They supplied two water tanks of Metro Water. Volunteers helped us majorly to clean the campus. Yet, there is more 15 to 20 per cent cleaning work that needs to be completed to restore it completely," she adds.
