Chennai: After torrential rains and floods forced their closure for nearly a month, schools and colleges in Chennai and its neighbouring districts reopened today.

For once, students were returning happily to schools and colleges, and parents too were smiling. The city streets were jampacked as parents were dropping their wards in schools.

'Apart from the 29 schools in Chennai where the cleaning work is still in progress, other schools have opened. To compensate the loss and to catch up to the portions, we have asked heads of the institutions to conduct classes on Saturdays. Special classes have also been planned,' said a top official of the School Education Department.

Also, psychological sessions too are in store for students, as experts felt many of them would be mentally hit due to the unprecedented floods. To avoid more stress of the already stressed class ten and twelve students, a special team for counselling has also been arranged by the education department.
