Rain alert: Northeast monsoon may arrive in Tamil Nadu by October 15

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala could see the onset of the northeast monsoon around October 15, provided favourable atmospheric conditions continue to develop over the coming days.

Weather blogger Hemachander, who operates the Delta Weatherman handle, has indicated that the weather pattern is likely to change within the next 72 hours, bringing the prospect of widespread rainfall across parts of the region.

Initial showers may begin in some Tamil Nadu districts on October 14. Rainfall could subsequently extend to the northern coastal belt, including Chennai, as well as the state’s southern coastal areas.

An atmospheric circulation is expected to contribute to the formation of a low-pressure area over the south-central Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. The system may then move towards the Sri Lankan coast over the following 48 hours.

Easterly winds have reportedly begun affecting the Cauvery delta and southern coastal districts, signalling a possible transition towards monsoon conditions.

Rain is expected to develop gradually across the delta region before spreading to other coastal districts. The anticipated October 15 onset remains dependent on how the developing weather system evolves.
