SRM Global Hospitals Performs Rare Double Shoulder Surgery with Stem Cells on 52-Year-Old Volleyball Coach

SRM Global Hospitals successfully treated a 52-year-old volleyball coach and sports nutritionist from Puducherry diagnosed with bilateral primary shoulder osteoarthritis, a rare condition affecting 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 100,000 individuals. The coach underwent a minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery, known as Comprehensive Arthroscopic Management (CAM) with stem cell biological resurfacing for both shoulders that offered an effective alternative to joint replacement.
The procedure involved the removal of damaged cartilage, cleaning of rough surfaces, microfracturing the bone to stimulate healing, and the injection of stem cells extracted from the patient’s pelvic bone.
The patient had been battling chronic right shoulder pain for almost ten years. Later, similar symptoms emerged in the left shoulder for over two years due to osteoarthritis, a deteriorating condition caused by repeated wear and tear of the cartilage covering the joint surfaces. He underwent CAM for his left shoulder two years ago, which resulted in excellent recovery. Encouraged by the success, he chose the same treatment for his right shoulder recently. This advanced biological resurfacing preserves the natural joint, reduces pain, and restores mobility, offering patients a high-quality, pain-free life.
In his comments, Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan, President of SRM Global Hospitals, said, "Advancements in medical innovations have opened promising avenues to address complex orthopaedic conditions effectively. When combined with stem cell therapy, these innovations offer new possibilities for joint preservation and pain relief. Each individual case receives tailored treatment.
The surgical team was led by Dr. Sudhir. V, Director Centre for Bone, Joint & Spine Care and performed by Dr. Saseendar Shanmugasundaram, Senior Consultant - Arthroscopy & Sports Medicine, SRM Global Hospitals, Chennai, and Dr. Samundeeswari, Consultant Arthroscopy & Sports Surgeon, SRM Global Hospitals, Chennai. Dr Saseendar remarked, “What once seemed impossible is now achievable with cutting-edge biological treatments like stem cell therapy. The CAM procedure with stem cell therapy allowed us to regenerate damaged cartilage and preserve the natural joint without resorting to replacement. However, personalisation of the procedure is important. Unlike other cases, his arthritis was not caused by accident but aggravated mainly by years of repeated throwing while playing volleyball. Hence, we customised the treatment based on his condition, lifestyle, and recovery potential. Our goal is to restore pain-free movement and improve quality of life.”
The patient is currently undergoing a structured rehabilitation program, which includes physiotherapy and controlled heavy lifting. The patient’s recovery requires long-term rehab, focusing on steady improvement and joint strength.
