Chennai City Council Fines for Abandoned Pet Dogs

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to fine residents who abandon their pet dogs ₹25,000. Once approved in the next meeting, the fine will be enforced

Currently, there are no fines for abandoning pets, but the number of stray dogs has increased due to people leaving their pets. The GCC has registered 115,548 pets across 15 zones and issued microchipped licences to 78,328 animals.

To control rabies, the GCC ran a vaccination drive last year, vaccinating over 1.47 lakh dogs. This year, they aim to vaccinate 2 lakh dogs, starting with a camp in Tiruvottiyur, Manali, and Tondiarpet from August 11. The camp will offer free vaccines for pets and stray dogs, targeting about 3,000 animals daily.

The GCC has received 15,477 complaints about stray dogs in the first six months of this year. Tondiarpet had the most complaints (1,869), followed by Manali (280). Other areas like Madhavaram and Anna Nagar also reported many complaints. Over the past six months, the GCC has captured 26,498 dogs for birth control in residential areas.
