Launch of ‘Mei’ - A Student Fact-Check Club to Combat Misinformation, in Association with Tamil Nadu Fact-Check Unit

The Department of Public Relations proudly launched மெய் (Mei), a groundbreaking student fact-check club dedicated to equipping students with critical skills to combat misinformation in the digital age. The initiative commemorates the 150th year celebrations of the FMM Congregation and is in association with the Tamil Nadu Fact-Check Unit.

The launch event on February 10, 2026, was inaugurated by Mr. Iyan Karthikeyan, Mission Director, Fact-Check Unit, Government of Tamil Nadu, who also unveiled the club’s logo. In his special address on information literacy and cyber safety, Mr. Karthikeyan addressed pressing issues like hate speech on social media and how fake news easily convinces the public. Students actively engaged with the speaker, posing insightful questions on combating misinformation as young digital citizens.

Mei’s Core Objectives:

  • Develop critical verification skills in students.
  • Train in identifying misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation.
  • Cultivate responsible digital citizenship.
  • Provide authentic, fact-checked content.
  • Collaborate with media houses and fact-checking organizations for training and workshops.

Through hands-on workshops, awareness campaigns, and research activities, Mei will foster a campus culture where students prioritize accuracy and credibility over virality and convenience. They will become digital citizens who not only consume information, but actively question and seek the right facts before sharing and validating any content.
