Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is estimated to affect approximately 850 million people worldwide. If left undetected and not treated in time, CKD can progress to kidney failure, leading to severe complications and premature mortality. By 2040, CKD is projected to become the 5th leading cause of years of life lost, highlighting the urgent need for global strategies to combat kidney disease.

Over 2 million people worldwide receive dialysis or are living with a kidney transplant1 in 10 people worldwide are affected by kidney disease, many of whom are unaware of the condition until it reaches advanced stages. Early detection, lifestyle changes, and timely medical interventions can significantly improve outcomes for those with kidney disease.

The 20th World Kidney Day is observed on 12th March 2026. The theme for this year is “Kidney Health For All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet”. This call to action is for people to prioritize kidney health through early screening and preventive care, support equitable access to treatment for all, and adopt environmentally responsible healthcare practices that protect both patients and the planet.

World Kidney Day is a joint initiative of the IFKF (International Federation of Kidney Foundations-World Kidney Alliance) and International Society of Nephrology (ISN)  to promote World Kidney Health by reaching out to patients, caregivers, Doctors, Patients care organisations and Kidney Foundations, Governments and Policy makers all over the world. It is important for people to know about kidney disease, detect early, take the right medication, share information and resources on social media, and work with Primary Health Care Centres in the state to advocate better early diagnosis.

TANKER Foundation is a member of the IFKF-WKA. Mrs.Latha Kumaraswami, Managing Trustee, TANKER Foundation was the first woman President of the IFKF-WKA (2022 to 2024) and member of World Kidney Alliance (IFKF- WKA). Dr. Georgi Abraham Founder Trustee said "As we celebrate WKD on 12th March my advice to keep your kidneys healthy “ Be positive in life, eat  healty diet, exercise, drink fluids to avoid dehydration, give up smoking ,alternative  medications” Check kidney functions if you have other illness and on any medication."KIDNEY DISEASE IS PREVENTABLE". Mrs Latha a Kumaraswami says it is important to create awareness on a daily basis and work with doctors and healthcare professionals to bring about awareness and fair access to all economic strata.

Every year TANKER Foundation conducts various activities to highlight the importance of OUR AMAZING KIDNEYS so that more people may be made aware of this dreaded disease, its causes and prevention.

We would be grateful for good coverage in your esteemed publication / newspaper / media channel. Your support will go a long way in helping us reach out to more underprivileged people suffering from kidney disease and creating more awareness of this silent killer.
