Punjab Association, Chennai celebrates Lohri festival
Punjab Association, Chennai celebrated Lohri festival, the grand Indian harvest festival with joy and fervor at Anna Adarsh Ground, Anna nagar on 5th January, 2020 . The Festival notifies the end of the winter season and the last day of the month of Paush, a day known as “Makar Sankaranti”.
Over 1000 Chennaites gathered together to celebrate Lohri festival to spread joy and happiness. The celebration began during the late evening with friends and relatives gathering at a specially arranged venue.
The Secretary, Punjab Association formally performed ‘Lohri Poojan’ and light up the bonfire during the sun set signifying passing of the winter solstice with people started celebrating by singing and dancing to the tunes of Lohri songs. People gathered around the bonfire threw popcorn, sugar-candies, sesame seeds, gur and other things in the fire as per the Lohri tradition. With performance of Gidda and Bhangra to the beat of Dhol, the drums of Punjab, the celebrations hit the skies. Lohri sweets were also distributed to all during the celebration.
This year, Punjab Association which took the responsibility of conducting the Lohri Mela, celebrated the Biradhari meet in advance. Punjabi Brethren entertaining the gathering with celebrity singers from Punjab followed by “Rodney and his band”, entertained with latest Punjabi and Bollywood number for the first time in Chennai.
The event marked with the Punjab Tadka with Southern spice with performance of Lohri Hungama, sponsored by Vikram Aggarwal. Rodney and his band entertained Chennai for the first time with latest Punjabi and Bollywood numbers.
The members and office bearers of Punjab Association wished the gathering, a Happy Lohri. Everyone enjoyed the warmth of the bonfire and gachak, ground nuts, popcorns, wishing each other happiness and prosperity.
Punjabis in Chennai constitute a relatively prosperous community. They are spread out throughout the city with the idea of exchanging the transmitted message of peace, harmony and brotherhood continuing their heritage and celebrating “Lohri” with all grandeur, every year.
