Specialists at Prasad Hospitals, perform a complex Carotid Web Stenting, rescuing a 62-year-old patient from a rare life-threatening vascular condition!

Cardiologists at the Prasad Hospitals, Nacharam, Hyderabad, have successfully treated a rare and life-threatening vascular condition in a 62-year-old male patient called Carotid Web, a medical condition that obstructs blood flow and potentially lead to recurrent brain strokes.

Mr. Gowtham Rama Krishna, a resident of Bengaluru, had approached several hospitals in Bengaluru in June this year, but the Doctors were reluctant to treat the patient. He approached Prasad Hospitals, Nacharam, Hyderabad, after presenting with an Ischemic Stroke. The Ischemic stroke is caused by a blood clot where the plaque blocks the artery supplying blood to the brain, starving brain tissue of oxygen.

To identify the underlying cause, a CT Carotid Angiogram was performed, which revealed the presence of a rare abnormality known as Carotid Web, in the Right Internal Carotid Artery (ICA). Further evaluation through Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA), confirmed the diagnosis. DSA is a medical imaging technique that uses X-rays and computer to create clear images of blood vessels by subtracting the background tissue. The Cardiology Team at Prasad Hospitals, Nacharam; subsequently performed a Right ICA Carotid Stenting procedure successfully. The procedure involved clearing the plaque from the carotid artery or the blood vessel supplying blood to the brain.

Dr. Sampath, DM (Cardiology); who led the procedure, stated, “Carotid web is a rare but treatable cause of stroke. Early diagnosis and timely intervention can prevent recurrent neurological events. We are glad to have achieved an excellent outcome for the patient.”

The procedure which took approximately 2 hours, was uneventful, and the patient remained hemodynamically stable and symptom-free throughout the hospital stay. After a brief period of recovery and observation, the patient was discharged in a stable and satisfactory condition on the day after the procedure. The patient can lead a normal life but need to adhere to medication, regular clinical follow-ups with the treating vascular, neurology and cardiology team.
