BMJ India organized a health camp in association with Smile Foundation

Wednesday, July 24, 2019: British Medical Journal (BMJ) India organized a free health camp today in Niveda Vidya Mandir sector 31 Noida in association with Smile Foundation. The Foundation’s Swabhiman programme works in the area of health and empowerment of women and BMJ supports the program by organizing a series of free health camps for underprivileged women and adolescent girls throughout the year.

The camp was specially organized for women and adolescent girls. More than 300 women attended the camp and benefited from the free health check-up and free medicine dispensation.

Besides the free health check-up, the camp also featured a street play by Sugandhya Natya Manch on menstrual hygiene and a session on ARSH (Adolescent Reproductive & Sexual Health) conducted by Vyomini Enterprises.

According to a report published by the Family Planning Association (FPA), India in 2019, 14% of pregnancies amongst women aged under 20 are unplanned. 50% of maternal deaths among girls from 15-19 years of age occur due to unsafe abortion practices. Enabling access to comprehensive reproductive education and safe practices is critical to supporting women’s health.

Mr. Prashant Mishra, Managing Director BMJ India and South Asia said, “We have joined hands with Smile Foundation to support their Swabhiman programme for women and adolescent girls. We hope through this program we are able to support medical care to women who do not have access to healthcare facilities. This program is aligned to our overall vision of creating a healthier world – and through such programs we hope to create more health awareness for women.”
