MADURAI: Police on Friday detained four Class 9 students for attacking two Class 11 students with a knife in a running bus after a verbal duel over the communities they belong to. The detained and the injured students belonged to two different communities.

The injured students hail from Mullaikadu while the detained students are from Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, near Mullaikadu. Both groups of students were studying in two different schools, police said.

A verbal duel broke out between the two groups of students when they were returning home. When they started a fistfight, the bus conductor and a few passengers brokered peace between them.

However, the boys from Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, all studying in Class 9, decided to take revenge on the other group of students. They boarded the bus on Friday morning with a knife. They approached the other students and picked up a quarrel with them. In no time, they took out a knife and attacked the senior boys. Two Class 11 students suffered injuries in the attack.

The Muthiahpuram police rushed to the spot and took the injured students to a nearby hospital. Police sources said their injuries were not life threatening.
