CHENNAI: The Embassy of Mexico in India inaugurated its fourth office in the country in Chennai on Tuesday.

Ramkumar Varadarajan, managing director of Shri Govindaraja Textiles, has been appointed as the honorary consul of Mexico for the seat in Chennai to represent all southern states -- Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.

The new consulate is located on Casurina Drive in Neelankarai.

Ambassador of Mexico to India Melba Pria said the new office in Chennai would have an important role in promoting economic and cultural ties between Mexico and India.

"It will serve as liaison with the business community in this part of the country and will cater to the increasing number of Mexicans visiting southern India," said the diplomat who is known for commuting in an autorickshaw as her official vehicle in Delhi.

"Mexico has a romantic relationship with India," she said adding, "We looking to promote tourism and trade."

Mexico has an embassy in New Delhi and honorary consulates in Mumbai and Kolkata.

The consulate in Chennai will not issue visas. People will have to travel to New Delhi for obtaining visas.
