Chennai: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurated a hi-tech Aavin parlour at Virugambakkam and a milk pastuerising and packaging unit at Salem Milkfarm. She opened the Aavin parlour set up a cost of Rs. 1.67 crore and the milk pastuerising and packaging unit, constructed at a cost of Rs. 14.80 crore in Salem via video conferencing at the Secretariat.

According to an official release, Jayalalithaa also distributed 25 milk tankers worth Rs 5.80 crore to drivers of Tamilnadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (Aavin). With the arrival of new milk tankers, Aavin will be able to procure around two lakh litres daily from farmers.

The State government is taking several steps for the welfare of milk producers. As a part of a plan to modernise milk farms, the State government has spent around Rs. 409 crore in the past four years. Through this plans, every day 30 lakh litres of milk is procured.

The hi-tech Aavin parlour built with fully air-conditioned and has a capacity to seat 50. Apart from a large television screen to entertain customers and children play equipment, the facility provides free wi-fi. Other than the milk pastuerising and packaging units inaugurated in the Salem milkfarm, 200-ml packaging units have capacity of packing 7,500 tetrapacks an hour.

It may be noted that the Chief Minister had on 23 September announced in the Assembly announced that 61 milk tankers worth Rs. 15.15 crore would be given to the Tamilnadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation.
