Mom getoff from Train, leads child to death
CHENNAI: An 18-month-old girl died and her mother suffered multiple fractures to a leg while trying to get off a moving train at Mambalam Railway Station on Tuesday.
The accident occurred around 5.40am when Lakshmi, 32, her daughter Ega Shree in her arms, and her husband Sundaravelan were returning home by the Mannai Express, police said. They had gone to Kumbakonam to attend a relative's marriage.
Sundaravelan, a professor in a city college, later told police they originally planned to get off at Egmore Railway Station. However, as the train halted at Mambalam, a co-passenger advised them to get off there, saying it would be easier to go to their residence in Ashok Nagar.
Sundaravelan told his wife about the change in plan and asked her to move out. He collected their belongings and followed. By then the train had started and was already gathering speed. The man managed to jump out and land safely, but Lakshmi, who was carrying the child, landed akwardly and lost balance, some witnesses told police. Ega Shree was torn from her grasp and slipped into the gap between the train and tracks. She died instantly.
A distraught Lakshmi got to her feet and tried to rush her daughter's rescue but got trapped in the gap and broke her leg in a few places, police said.
On receiving the information, a team of personnel from the Egmore Government Railway Police rushed to the place and sent the child's body to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Lakshmi was taken to the government Stanley Medical College and Hospital where she is recovering.
Based on a complaint from Sundaravelan, the GRP police registered a case.
